Description:
- Industries are important for economic development as they produce goods, create jobs, and support modern living. However, they also have a significant impact on the environment. This chapter highlights the relationship between industries and the environment, emphasizing the need for sustainable industrial practices.
Types of Industries (EVS perspective)
- Agro-based industries: Use agricultural products (cotton, sugarcane, jute). These often lead to water pollution from waste.
- Mineral-based industries: Use minerals and ores (iron, steel, cement). Mining and processing cause land degradation and air pollution.
- Chemical-based industries: Produce fertilizers, pesticides, plastics. These generate toxic wastes that pollute soil and water.
- Forest-based industries: Use wood and bamboo. If not regulated, they lead to deforestation and biodiversity loss.
Environmental Problems Caused by Industries
- Air Pollution – Release of smoke, carbon dioxide, and other harmful gases from factories cause respiratory diseases and climate change.
- Water Pollution – Industrial waste, chemicals, and untreated sewage contaminate rivers and groundwater.
- Noise Pollution – Machinery, transport, and construction create noise, affecting human and animal health.
- Thermal Pollution – Industries release hot water into rivers, harming aquatic life.
Sustainable Industrial Practices
- Using clean and renewable energy (solar, wind, hydro).
- Recycling and reusing industrial waste.
- Treating wastewater before releasing it into rivers.
- Planting trees near industrial areas to reduce pollution.
- Developing eco-friendly technologies.
- Following the “polluter pays” principle – industries responsible for pollution must pay for its control.
